OPEP Mechanism Explained
The science of oscillating positive expiratory pressure.
The Mechanism
On exhalation through the device, a steel ball repeatedly lifts and reseats in a cone, producing (1) positive expiratory pressure that splints airways open and raises the pressure behind trapped mucus, and (2) high-frequency oscillation that reduces sputum viscoelasticity.
The Effect
Together these accelerate the mucociliary escalator, moving secretions from peripheral to central airways for clearance by cough or huff, and support lung-volume expansion.
Basis
An independent Griffith University review (Prof. Norman Morris) validated the AirPhysio mechanism within established airway-clearance science.
